The key focus of CHS is the inter-disciplinary study of health, illness and health care in local, national and international settings, which brings perspectives from the humanities and social sciences to the study of medical science, clinical and public health practice and health policy.

The focus of the Melbourne Institute is: applied macroeconomic research; labour economics and social policy; and applied industrial economic research; and health economics research.

The Nossal Institute works in partnership with other organisations who share its vision of improving health where health is at its poorest. It strongly endorses the global responsibility to work together to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

Sustainable Health Services aims to promote health services that are provided in an environmentally responsible manner. It includes advancement of Green Clinics and Green Hospitals, because health services are significant contributors to a society’s environmental footprint especially in developed countries. It also covers ethical questions about equity, access and quality of health care (see the Onemda Vic Health Koori Health Unit).
