About John Gummer:
Lord Deben brings a unique political and international perspective to the issue of climate change. He remains one of the longest serving Conservative Party politicians in the UK and is now president of an international NGO uniting parliamentarians worldwide to advocate for strong climate ambition.

After 35 years as a Conservative Party MP, John Gummer retired at the 2010 general election. In 1989, Gummer joined the cabinet under Margaret Thatcher as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, moving to become Secretary of State for the Environment under John Major in 1993. He remains the longest serving Secretary of State for the Environment the UK has ever had.  In June 2010, following his retirement as an MP, John Gummer was awarded a peerage and the title of Lord Deben.

Lord Deben has held a career-long interest in environmental issues and has consistently championed an identity between environmental concerns and business sense. As Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, he was the first to take seriously the effects of agriculture policy on wildlife and the countryside, and as Environment Secretary, he also introduced the UK's first environmental tax, the landfill tax. In 1992, he was part of the United Kingdom's delegation to the Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly (the Earth Summit +5) and subsequently to the Climate Change Conference in Kyoto and Buenos Aires.

Friends of the Earth called him 'the best Environmental Secretary we have ever had'.  The BBC awarded him the title 'Parliamentarian who did most for the environment internationally' in their Green Awards in 1995 and 1996. In 1997 he was awarded a Medal of Honour by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (the UK's largest environmental organisation) and is the only government minister ever to have received this award.

In April 2005, Lord Deben joined with a former Environment Secretary from the Labour Party and the environment spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats, to unveil a draft piece of climate legislation in Parliament. It was this bill that eventually became the UK's 2008 Climate Change Act. In December 2005, David Cameron appointed him Chairman of the Quality of Life Commission and he continues this work today in the House of Lords.

In June 2010, Lord Deben was elected as the president of international non-government organisation, GLOBE, which brings together parliamentarians all over the world to work on environmental issues.
