Research Topic: 'International Market Entry Strategies in Firms of the Renewable Energy Industry'

Firms in general conduct foreign direct investment (FDI) for different reasons. It is assumed that companies either seek new markets, resources, strategic assets, or efficiency. The decision as to which markets to enter is influenced by several country-specific location factors like psychic distance (factors preventing the flow of information from and to the market) and institutions (e.g. social norms, government incentives, environmental regulations) among others. It is widely recognized that the selection of a host country for locating FDI is often one of the most important decisions that managers of firms have to make as location–related variables have a crucial influence on global competitiveness and, hence, the probability of a firm's long-term survival.

In a mostly qualitative approach, I look at companies of the solar power industry and how location choices are made. This includes the motives of the companies for FDI, the decision making process, and the reasons why countries are selected or discarded. Other expected critical factors I look at are government incentives for fostering renewable energy, societies' attitudes toward solar power, and market factors in general that might influence location choice.

I graduated in 2005 from the University of Applied Sciences, Mannheim, Germany, with an undergraduate degree in industrial engineering and in 2006 from the University of Melbourne, Australia, with a Masters degree in engineering project management. After more than two years of industry and work experience in Germany and Brazil, I joined the University of Melbourne again to pursue a PhD in the international business group, Department of Management and Marketing.
